Systematic review and meta-analysis of bariatric surgery for Pediatric obesity.
This paper, published in Annals of Surgery in July 2008 by Jonathon Treadwell, examined 8 studies of LapBanding in kids and reported a reduction in BMI of 10.6 to 13.7 points. Resolution of childhood diabetes varied between 80% to 100%, and eradication of blood pressure from 50% to 100%.
Only 8% of patients required re-operation (Ed: although Australian studies have since reported up to 1 in 5 may require a second operation). The article concluded that the amount of weight loss after bariatric surgery among paediatric patients appeared to be clinically significant.
